Your vote does make a difference - participate in the local elections
Democracy is based on joint decisions. When you use your right to vote, you take responsibility in relation to society and your fellow human beings
When you vote in an election, you participate in electing the political candidates, and you influence decisions which affect your life.
Show up on Election Day on Tuesday the 18th of November and cast your vote. Your vote does make a difference!
Who can vote?
You can vote at regional and local elections, if you:
- are 18 years old
- have permanent residence in Denmark
- are a Danish citizen, citizen of another EU country, a Norwegian,
British or Icelandic citizen - or if you have lived in Denmark,
Greenland or the Faroe Islands for 4 years prior to the election.
How to vote
Everyone who has the right to vote will receive a polling card by mail.
The polling card tells you the date of the election and the location where you should vote. It is generally possible to vote from 08.00 AM in the morning to 8.00 PM in the evening.
Officials are present at every polling station to make sure everything proceeds according to the regulations.
When you arrive at the polling station, you go to the election table indicated on your polling card. At the table, you hand in your polling card, and the officials at the table will give you two ballots, one for local elections and one for regional elections. The ballots list the political parties and candidates. You will be asked to give your date of birth to make sure that you are the person indicated on the polling card.
You take the ballots to the polling booth, where you go alone. Voting is secret, and no one else is allowed to see who you vote for. Make a cross (X), using the pencil or pen in the polling booth, next to the candidate or the party that you wish to vote for. It is important that you only make one cross on each ballot; otherwise, the ballot may be declared invalid.
If you make a mistake on the ballot, you may ask the officials to exchange the ballot for a new one. However, this is only possible, if you have not already put the ballot into the ballot box. If you are unsure of how to vote, you can ask for help from the officials at the polling station. If you find it difficult to read Danish, one of the officials may help you.
Finally, you leave the polling booth and put each of the ballots in the correct ballot box. Remember to fold the ballots, so no one can see who you vote for.
