Before you can get married in Frederikshavn Municipality, you must first obtain approval that you are allowed to marry in Denmark.
The authority responsible for processing your application depends on your residence status in Denmark.
Please note that we cannot schedule a marriage ceremony until we have received the necessary approval from the relevant Danish authority.
Civil marriage ceremonies can be held at Frederikshavn Town Hall or Skagen Town Hall.
If both of you have permanent residence in Denmark, or permanent residence rights under UN-regulations, you must complete a marriage application through the website Borger.dk.
When completing the application form, you must enter your preferred wedding date.
After we receive your application, we will either confirm your wedding date and send confirmation to Digital Post, or contact you if we need more information.
If one or both of you do not have permanent residence in Denmark, your application must be submitted to the Danish Agency of Family Law (Familieretshuset).
If you have questions about documents, processing times or your approval, please contact the Danish Agency of Family Law directly.
When we receive your approval from the Danish Agency of Family Law, we will contact you by email and offer available wedding dates.
If you already have approval from the Danish Agency of Family Law (Familieretshuset) and you would like to get married in Frederikshavn Municipality, please contact the Danish Family Law Agency and ask them to transfer your case to us.

Marriage ceremonies are available in Danish and English. On selected dates, ceremonies can also be conducted in German.
Both of you must understand the language used during the ceremony.
If neither of you can communicate with us in Danish, English or German, you must bring a translator.
The translator can be a friend, family member or another person who can translate during the ceremony.
The translator must be physically present at the ceremony.
The ceremony cannot take place if neither of you understands the language used and no translator is present.
According to Danish law, a marriage ceremony must be witnessed by two witnesses.
After the ceremony, the witnesses confirm that the marriage has taken place and sign the marriage register.
You may bring your own witnesses. If you do, we need their full names and addresses before the ceremony.
Your witnesses are welcome to take photos and record videos during the ceremony.
On weekdays, Frederikshavn Municipality can provide two witnesses if needed.
After the ceremony, you will receive an international marriage certificate.
The certificate contains the same information in five languages: Danish, English, German, French and Spanish.
Some countries require a marriage certificate to be legalised before it can be accepted by the local authorities. The requirements vary from country to country.
Please contact the authorities in the country where you will use the certificate to find out whether an Apostille or another form of legalisation is required.
